How deep to bury electrical conduit Overview
Materials needed:
- A length of conduit with a diameter of 1/2 inch
- Grinder or angle grinder with cutting wheel attached to it
- Drill and hole saw, if you want to make the hole deeper than 1/2 inch for your conduit to fit in.
Steps:
- Find a good spot for the conduit underground. For this job we’ll be using an existing trench as our guide.
- Cut out the portion of the trench in which you want your conduit to fit so that you will have a little extra space around it to guide it into place.
- Grab your conduit, and begin drilling holes in the substrate through which the conduit will be placed. We’ll be making many small holes in order to allow room for future expansion. Be careful not to use too much force on your drill as this can crack the concrete or even pack down the soil underneath like a formica counter top.
- After you have drilled many holes to accommodate your conduit, begin placing it into the holes by feeding it through with your fingers like a snake ring.
- After you have all of your conduit in place, grind out the ends using a small angle grinder or a grinder if it has one built in. You can use a hand held sander if you want to finish off the rough edges.
- Take a few cement mix to cover the ends of your conduit, this will help to insure that you have a nice water tight seal. Finally, pack the surrounding dirt down and let it dry.
- After it has dried you can take your drill and create holes for wires to run through using a hole saw, or you can feed your electrical wire through the inside of the conduit for easy concealment.

What is the Minimum Burial Depth For PVC Conduit?
